Android backup works differently depending on whether you're on a Samsung, a Google Pixel, or another brand — and the gaps between them trip people up more than they should. Here's what you actually need to do before handing your phone to a repair shop.
The Baseline: Google Account Backup
Every Android phone backs up certain data to your Google account automatically — contacts, calendar, Chrome bookmarks, app list, Wi-Fi passwords, and some app data. Make sure this is current before your repair.
Go to Settings → System → Backup (the exact path varies slightly by manufacturer). Tap Back Up Now and wait for it to complete. Check the timestamp to confirm.
This covers the essentials but not everything. Photos, messages, and app-specific data need separate handling.
Photos and Videos
If you're using Google Photos, open the app and check that backup is complete — there's a cloud icon in the top right that shows pending uploads. Switch to Wi-Fi and let it finish before you drop the phone off. If you have a large library and limited Google storage, consider connecting to a computer and copying the DCIM folder directly as a failsafe.
Samsung users on One UI have Samsung Cloud as an additional option (Settings → Accounts and Backup → Samsung Cloud), which separately backs up Gallery, Contacts, Calendar, and some Samsung app data. It's worth enabling if you're already using a Samsung account — it runs alongside Google backup, not instead of it.
Messages and Call Logs
Google's default Messages app backs up SMS to Google Drive (Settings → Messages → Chat Features → turn on RCS, then Settings → Backup). For call logs, Google Backup covers most of it. Samsung's own Phone and Messages apps sync to Samsung Cloud separately.
If you use WhatsApp, back up inside the app itself: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up. WhatsApp backups go to Google Drive and aren't included in the standard Android backup.
What to Disable Before Handing It Over
Google Find My Device. Like Apple's Find My iPhone, Google's device protection can complicate certain repair procedures — specifically factory resets or software restores. Turn it off temporarily: Settings → Security → Find My Device → toggle off. Turn it back on after pickup.
Samsung's Find My Mobile (if applicable). Settings → Biometrics and Security → Find My Mobile → toggle off. This is separate from Google's protection and also needs to be disabled.
Screen lock — same situation as iPhones. The technician needs to test the repair. Either disable it temporarily or share your PIN with the shop.
Google Pixel Specifics
Pixels use Google One backup, which is more thorough than standard Android backup — it includes app data, SMS, call history, and device settings. Go to Settings → System → Backup → Back Up Now. The backup size and completion status show on screen.
One thing worth knowing about Pixels: the Titan M security chip means a factory restore without your Google credentials is impossible. If your phone needs a software restore as part of the repair, the shop will need you to sign in — or they'll need the device unlocked going in. Make sure your Google account password is something you can access, not just saved in the phone's autofill.
A Note on Third-Party Repair Shops
Your data doesn't need to leave your device during a physical repair — screen replacement, battery swap, charging port fix. The technician is working on hardware, not your software.
The backup is about the unexpected. A slip, a second fault discovered mid-repair, a software diagnostic that requires a reset. These are uncommon. But doing a backup takes ten minutes and removes any doubt.
If a shop ever tells you they need your Google account credentials to perform a standard hardware repair, that's a red flag. The exception is unlocking a bootloader or performing a software restore that's part of the actual repair scope — in which case it should be discussed and agreed on before work starts.
Backed up and ready? Bring it in and we'll take it from there.
